willie randolph...

After the Mets beat the Angels on monday night and the team is one game under .500- Willie Randolph gets fired as the manager. What a shame? Willie's managerial record with the Mets ends @ 302-253. He's the second winningest manager in Mets history behind Davey Johnson. Plus, Randolph was the first African-American manager in New York baseball history.

It's a gutless move by Mets management. I think of brunt of the blame should go to GM Omar Minaya. His signings of Carlos Delgado, Moises Alou, and Carlos Beltran haven't paid off. Ex-Giant Alou is a fixture on the DL. Delgado's best years seem like a lifetime ago in Toronto. He's a shell of his former self and he'll be 36 next week- which isn't really old in baseball in this day and age. Beltran looked like a superstar coming from Houston via Kansas City, but he's turned out to be a waste of money.

The Mets don't have a legitimate starting catcher and when I saw the Mets play the Giants a couple weeks ago, they were starting journeyman Ryan Church(who was suffering from a concussion) and Fernando Tatis(who wasn't even in the majors last season) in the outfield. I don't know enough about the pitching to make a comment. I do know that also fired pitching coach Rick Peterson has always been overrated...

Minaya must go and so should his flunky Tony Bernazard.

Jerry Manual deserved another shot to manage in the big leagues. But they stuck him with the "interim" tag, which means he'll be gone next year when Minaya is sent out the door.

My prediction: Randolph will be managing the Yankees in the next year or so after Girardi wears out his welcome...
